人生沒有用不到的經歷

最近想把美國培育軍醫的大學 Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS，簡稱為USU) 用中文寫出來介紹給讀者。USU很特別，她是美國聯邦政府所設的六所公立公費軍校之一，除USU之外，還有西點軍校(United States Military Academy at West Point) 、美國海軍官校 (United States Naval Academy)、美國空軍官校 (United States Air Force Academy)、美國海岸巡防學院 (United States Coast Guard Academy)、美國海洋商務學院 (United States Merchant Marine Academy)。

USU 創建於1972 年，醫學院自1976年招生，首屆畢業生自1980年在美國軍隊及所屬之醫院服務，現在美國服役20年以上的常備軍醫多半畢業於USU。與其他軍校不同的是，USU 以 University (大學) 命名，而非其他軍校的 Academy (學院)。美國自 1970 年代才開始籌建培育軍醫的大學，比二戰之後台灣的國防醫學院晚了二十多年，可見「國防醫學院」存在對國家之重要性。

介紹USU 之前，先看一下她成立的宗旨 (Commitment)

We provide the Nation with health professionals dedicated to career service in the Department of Defense and the United States Public Health Service and with scientists who serve the common good.
USU 是聯邦政府所屬的醫學大學，其宗旨在發展卓越之軍事醫學與公共衛生，並將之應用於平時與戰時。我們致力提供醫學專業給國防部，並有科學家為我們國家公共衛生之整體利益提供專業服務。

We serve the uniformed services and the Nation as an outstanding academic health sciences center with a worldwide perspective for education, research, service, and consultation; we are unique in relating these activities to military medicine, disaster medicine, and military medical readiness.
我們以卓越的醫學中心服務軍人及國家，並以全球化的視野提供教育、研究、服務、及諮詢；其獨特性在將這些主題運用於軍陣醫學、災難醫學、及軍事上的特殊需求。

USU建立之宗旨 (Commitment) 完全適用於台灣的國防醫學院，Commitment 這字若用在個人，就是 “一生所追求的目標”。進入國防醫學院的目的，不是畢業後選小科、學開業、做醫美；上面說得很清楚，讀國醫的目的是將教育、研究、服務、及醫學諮詢，應用於「軍陣醫學、災難醫學、及軍事上的特殊需求」。因此，內科、外科、急症醫學，才是軍醫的主軸；除此之外，對於重大傳染病的研究及防治，應是國防醫學中心研究的重心。

國醫的學生不要跟普醫的人計算畢業幾年後當總醫師、幾年後考上專科/次專科，幾年後升主治醫師，幾年後薪水多少多少。「We serve the uniformed services and the Nation (我們服務軍人及國家)」，「the uniformed services」是軍人的總稱，軍醫院是國家的醫院，其主要目的是「教育、研究、服務」，並提供民間醫院無法進行之研究資料，扮演「諮詢 (consultation)」的角色。
